Raven is the trickster in our ancient legends and is known to be very intelligent and fun. I've witnessed the tricks of the raven in the wild many times, and one incident that comes to mind involves a black bear. One day on the coast near Bella Bella, we enjoyed the sunshine as we put crab traps in a large bay with a beautiful grassy shoreline. I watched a black bear wander the beach, looking for food. High above the bear, a raven was flying along; it looked down on the bear and dove straight at it, pulling up just short of the back but close enough that its feet hit the bear. The bear took off at a good run for about fifty meters and stopped to look back to see what had startled it.

Meanwhile, the raven had risen to the sky and was flying undetected by the bear. As I worked on this rendition of the trickster holding the sun, I broke out in a smile at this bird that is so full of fun and food. It is said that Raven was born white and turned black because it got stuck in the smoke hole of a chief's house after eating so much of the smoked fish that hung in the rafters.
