Maquinna Hat by Lena Jumbo
The well known "Maquinna Hat" (first documented having been worn by Chief Maquinna from Nootka) carried a distinctive, traditional design depicting a whale hunt. This hat has been made from cedar bark. It has dyed strands to create the colorful whale hunt design with a characteristic knob on the top. This hat was worn by the high ranking west coast chiefs and whalers when they went out fishing or whaling to keep the elements off their heads.
Lena Jumbo is an elder from the Ahousaht village located on Flores Island near Tofino. She is one of the few weavers today who has the knowledge to still weave this traditional Maquinna Whaling Hat. When Lena isn't weaving her hats and baskets she enjoys bingo and telling stories about her life and times.
